Program History Grandreaders was developed in 1998 to combat the literacy problems found in the upper grades. Addressing these literacy problems with the youngest children would improve their basic reading skills and lay a foundation for future learning. Support at a young age would build reading confidence and help encourage a life long love for reading.
Participating children test below grade level and are recommended by their teachers or other school personnel. Volunteer tutors meet weekly with identified children to enhance the reading experience through a variety of language art activities.
Expected outcomes are to increase a child's ability to read, to enhance reading skills and encourage a love of reading. To promote these outcomes a caring community of older adults work with the children while nurturing feelings of positive self-esteem.
Project Focus Grandreaders is an intergenerational literacy program for children in second grade. Participating children need extra support in order to increase their English Language skills and/or to bring their reading comprehension skills up to grade level. Volunteers meet with the same student weekly throughout the year, to enhance the reading/language experience through a variety of reading and language art activities.
